The Subritzky family, of Aucklands North Shore, listed their Spitfire with the online auction site for an unspecified price.
The Vickers Supermarine single-seat Spitfire is one of fewer than 50 left in the world.
Mike Subritzky told the New Zealand Herald having the Spitfire was a privilege, with its history making it the best aircraft the family had owned.
Its a time capsule. Its been around since 1944 and its special because its not a replica.
Although the Subritzkys have not put an asking price on the aircraft, Spitfires in good condition can be worth up to $5 million, the newspaper reported.
The Spitfire has been regarded as one of the most famous fighter planes in history and its sale has generated keen interest here and overseas.
Weve had interest from around the country, the UK, America and even the Germans are after it.
Mr Subritzky said people had already come to view the Spitfire, which for many has brought back memories.
Its special and a real bit of history. Were not just going to give it away.
The online auction was due to close on Friday March 28.
So far there have been no bids for the aircraft.
