Making A Fashion Statement

Jun 13th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Fashion

haven’t been in school for a decade now, but I still remember every outfit, of every first day, of every grade. And I’m not alone.

“Oh, throughout the ages!” says Adrian Mainella, host of Fashion File, who was already shopping at Harry Rosen by the eighth grade. “You tell me what age you want, and I’ll tell you what I wore.”

Which should serve as a warning to parents that if your six-year-old is laying out endless variations of “looks” he or she may don come September, the battle is already lost. You have a fashion freak on your hands, and all your hopes for your progeny’s future in law, medicine or accounting will probably come to naught. But it’s not your fault: Fashion obsessives (and their related evil cousins, design obsessives and artists) are born, not made. And nothing brings out the budding Vogue vampire like the first day of school.

“The first day is like a red carpet,” says Rebecca Hardy, Canada’s Next Top Model. “It’s a huge big deal. You always scope out your outfit.”

“It’s like your coming-out party because you finally get to have your own little life in public,” says Bruno Billio, a Toronto sculptor and interior-design consultant well-known for his style splashes. “There was a giant part of the summer where I was like, ‘Can we go buy clothes now?’ I even remember my kindergarten outfit: chocolate brown turtleneck, blue sports jacket, chocolate brown flared cords, brown and orange brogue boots. And obviously you check out the other kids. Like, ‘You’re wearing a bow tie and jacket on the first day of school? Oh no.’ “
