Professionals Urge Promotion Of Health Education

Health professionals have stressed the need to promote health education at federal, state and local government levels.

They made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of the first National Conference on Health Promotion and Education (HPE)in Abuja.

The communiqué stressed the need to make advocacy a major tool for making HPE a priority.

Education It said the planning and implementation of HPE programmes should focus on diseases and target broader determinants of health.

It said the effective implementation of HP programmes required intersectoral collaboration, public-private partnership and community involvement.

The communiqué also observed that HPE was crucial to National Development and the attaintment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It said: “The major challenges of HP division at all levels are how to practice HP within the frame work of Health Sector Reform.

“There should be increased funding of HP activities at all levels-federal, state and local governments.”

The communiqué also identified the need for recruitment of health educators and professional training of HPE staff at all levels.

It recommended that the HPE division at all levels should be reorganised and strengthened along with advocacy, health education and service improvement.

The communique stressed the need to institutionalise and promote the practice of HPE services in all settings, such as clinics, schools, workplaces and communities.

It said the HP division would work together with the Federal Ministry of Information to ensure that the health Bill, when passed into law, was known, supported and implemented at all levels.

Education It called for accelerated harmonisation of the health bill by the National Assembly and urged speedy signing of the bill by the President.

Education It brought together stakeholders at the federal, state and local government levels who brainstormed on implementation strategies of health promotion.
